after wrapping up one crazy film in NY, we flew off to jamaica for a week to shoot serena + len’s wedding. we are getting some nice r+r time here while we plan for our visit to LA and san fran for a wedding and a workshop. we will be in LA next weekend for jennie + howard’s wedding (so so excited…) and then we are flying to san fran to get ready for our workshop at calumet. it is kinda like a little mini-evolution experience. those who came last october know first hand just how much trouble we had fitting everything into the 3 days we had (and thats with going from 10am to 11-12PM every day). for calumet, we are going to try and bring it all together in 3 hours. as tiffen/steadicam is putting on the event, we will also be highlights how their products have helped us (and that means a live demo of the flyer and tiffen Dfx).

if you have some time monday november 23rd, come visit myself, konrad, and amina at calumet. i do believe there are still some spots available for the 3 hour workshop, and the cost is $295 per person. i have attached an idea of what we are looking to cover (though perhaps a little ambitious).

here is a link to their site for more info and/or to register.

P.

1100 // introductions by patrick, konrad, and amina

// how we got here
// it doesn’t have to take forever

1130 // understanding lens choices in storytelling

// compression and exaggeration
// why to leave your zooms at home
// letting the moment choose the lens

1200 // understanding movement in storytelling

// every tool says something
// how the merlin, pilot, and flyer fit with the MKII and 7d
// how movement and lens choice fit together

1230 // adding color into the mix.

// going beyond just making things looks cool.
// basic color theory, reading scopes
// using tiffen Dfx to add affect over effect

1330 // bringing it all together

// investing in yourself
// every decision must serve the story

1400 // q+ a plus hands on time

we always seem to ramble on about what you don’t see at every event you shoot, how you can avoid paradigms, and how you can open yourself up to experiencing new things. the epitome of that, for us, was this idea we pitched to michael and chrystalle. we asked if we could come down 4 days before the wedding and cover everything related to their story from the dress fittings to the cake being made, decorations being sewn to jewelry being polished. in the end, the main feature will be roughly the same length, but the story will have so much more depth and context (at least thats our goal).

have some great snippets of their main feature to share here.

it’s thursday. but it’s not just thursday to me. it’s the day after one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

i’ve spent the last two days with a group of the most open, honest, and genuinely wonderful people i ever expected to share so much with.

over the last couple of days, justin and i hosted our first stillmotion workshop for professional photographers, an opportunity that forced us to truly introspect into our art, but more importantly, into ourselves. we wanted to share that experience with the photographers that were attending our workshop and from the connections we all seemed to make with each other, it seemed evident that everyone was moved in some way – including us.

hence the name, the workshop was much more about the why of photography than the how. but, in asking yourself “why”, you trigger so many more questions about yourself than you ever knew you had. this was the most incredible part of the workshop for me.

one of the main topics that was discussed was the process and personal commitment to creating meaningful images. on day two, we went out for a small shoot where we shot two of the attendees, mel and dave, who actually got married earlier this year. we had about 15 minutes of free shooting before we started into a bit of content. in these 15 minutes, i asked for the story of how the two of them met, and managed to create three images that represented that story in my eyes. what was amazing to me was how mel reacted when seeing the images for the first time. before she realized the meaning of the images, she probably noticed the photographic and esthetic qualities of the images, which is what most people see when they look at our blog or website. it’s only when she realized the deeper meaning in what she was looking at that the real emotions came. in the honesty of the moment, her tears inspired the photographers around her (including myself) to continue down the path that we are newly and constantly exploring.

i asked mel and dave if they would be willing to share their story with you all. they sent me two separate perspectives of their growing friendship and romance.

melanie:
When I met David, I was in the darkest period of my life. I was 28 and getting divorced. I was humiliated and felt so alone – I didn’t know anyone else who was separated. My friend, though a great listener had no idea how to relate to my situation. So, one morning while we were chatting, he handed the phone over to Dave in the hopes he could provide me with some insight since he’d just survived his own divorce. David was so sweet and supportive and told me I could call him anytime if I needed to chat. But everyone says that. He knew I’d never take him up on his offer so later that evening, he called me just to check in. From then on we were fast friends and confidants. We helped each other persevere and grew as people. Later, when I felt ready to resume real life, I remember a friend rolling her eyes when I said “I need to find someone like Dave”. I couldn’t see what was right in front of me. Finally it hit me – like a truck. David sees the real me. He is the light that took over once the darkness faded.

david:
I moved back to Sudbury after my divorce. My best friend, Shawn, wanted to support his close friend Mélanie through her divorce but was having difficulties relating to her situation. One morning when he was listening to Mel on the phone, Shawn asked me if I could talk to her since I had just gone through it myself and might have some advice. I agreed and he passed me the phone. I didn’t have any advice, but I understood her and that made a difference. When we were done talking I told her that she could call me anytime. I knew most people who say that don’t mean it and she would assume I was full of crap, so I called her that evening just to touch base and check on her.

At this point, Mélanie believed me and took advantage of my offer after that. Our friendship grew out of our honesty, a genuine desire to help each other through an experience no one else we knew could even understand, and a shared sense of adventure.

When I was ready to date again, I found myself wanting to find someone like Mel. Apparently, she felt the same way. We found our counterpart in each other. I couldn’t have trusted or loved anyone else as easily as Mélanie.

I have studied Journalism and English Literature, but I have never found a combination of words capable of describing the depth of my love for her. We are partners in everything, even learning how to live.

we will have casey from mindcastle joing us to take the load off of back to back presentations. casey brings a fresh look to adding effects to your pieces. the after effects he does on his same day edits are insane. more than that, him and danielle (the other half of mindcastle) are both such awesome and passionate people that it will be awesome to have him share this with us.

we will be in long island on tuesday october 13th, speaking from 2-6:30. you can see more info and register here.

on wednesday october 14th we will be in new jersey, speaking from 2-6:30 again. you can see info for that and register here.

if you have any questions about our presentation itself, please feel free to leave them here.

the ring shot has become quite the widespread phenomenon within our industry. i do believe it was our filipino friend jmag who first brought these into his films. they have certainly evolved over the years and have become quite the highlight within a wedding film. for us, as things become closer to a cliche, we try and move away from them. what that means now, is that while we still do ring shots, we don;t include them in every sde. we also try to go that extra step and make sure that the shot doesn’t just look awesome but it also ties into that couple’s unique story. another use of ring shots, for us, is to interact with the titles either at the beginning or end of the film.

with that, i bring you a little behind the scenes piece we shot that shows what can go into one ring shot. a good 10 minutes of production for 3 seconds of screen time.

what your seeing here is a couple boxes we found at the brides house being used to elevate the cinevate linear tracking system so we can mount it upside down. we then ran the 7d with a 24 f1.4 on the slider. why a 24? well we needed something wider to allow for then negative space needed for the titles. the 24 can focus super close and is also very shallow when you do so, so it seemed like the perfect fit. we also use a lazy susan we found on the table to wipe the rings and copy out.

say hi to our new stillmotion experience blog. this is where we will feature updates about all of our workshops, in-studio experience events, as well as anything else we are a part of.

what is really cool, is that we will be able to take all of the questions we get across emails, forums, phone calls, and comments and add that time together to post more informative and thorough responses here. here is the deal, in exchange we are hoping we can also share some of our work that is in progress and we can get all of you to help make it better. we are working on something for tiffen/steadicam at the moment, and we were thinking how awesome it would be to show the piece as it is and see what else people wanted to know before things were finished of.

you see, you are a big part of the success of this blog. the more involved everybody gets, the more time we will be able to devote to giving back and sharing in turn.

coming soon; this tiffen piece in mid-edit, the anatomy of a ring shot, features on infocus, our NJ/NY events, and some details on the upcoming evolution experience in october. we will also be adding the oft requested ‘whats in your bag’ as a permanent post to this blog.
